Today’s encryption methods keep our digital lives safe, but quantum computing threatens to upend them. Algorithms that protect banking transactions, medical records, and state secrets could be cracked once powerful quantum machines arrive.

To prepare, the EU Member States, with support from the European Commission, have released a roadmap for transitioning to post-quantum cryptography (PQC).

This roadmap emphasizes:

  • Urgency: transition must begin now, not once quantum computers are widespread.
  • Coordination: member States must act together to ensure interoperability.
  • Hybrid approaches: Combining classical and quantum-safe algorithms during migration.
  • Awareness: raising understanding across government, business, and society.

Belgium’s financial institutions, government bodies, and industries must take this roadmap seriously. By acting early, we can strengthen resilience and set an example for others.
